A man in the apartment across the way opens the fridge, a woman slices bread on a board. Are they real people? Or people pretending to be people? Set inside the frame of this lit window, their movements are no longer absorbed in their tasks; they seem instead to be playing a role for the sake of some voyeur. It seems these ingenious little beings are so cunning that they can trick the very business they’re attending to. In which case they must be laughing at me too, for watching them. Or maybe they’re offering to enter into an agreement with their audience: we’ll let you stare at us so long as you keep your window bare too.

“Part III – The Nights”, Handcrafted City: Athens Amid Yeses and Nos
