#7 THE CLOSE-UP AS PLOT TWIST

In place of overvaluing closeness: the spanning of distance. In place of history: genealogy. The close-up not as some tool for understanding or for empathy but as a means of recognition. Close reading and the anatomy of the image as an antidote to phantasmagoria. In place of twists: only turns. The lines that link our blind spots delineate – quite unexpectedly – the face of our common future.

Geli Mademli

#7 ΤΟ CLOSE-UP ΩΣ PLOT TWIST

Translated for (and taken from) an essay by Geli Mademli titled “Kinds of Close-Ups: Proximity as a Plan of Action” («Είδη κοντινών: Η εγγύτητα ως πλάνο εργασίας») written in 2025 for Plot Twist – Beyond the Sixth Sense, a special edition published for the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TIFF66).

The flicking film still shows cinephile Hossain Sabzian (as himself) in the Abbas Kiarostami film Close-Up (1990). A flicker of confusion, a tentative hope.

In place of twists: only turns.
